lpenabled - monitor printer output port and enable printer when port is
writable.
lpenabled printer [ poll ] [ delay ]
lpenabled monitors the output device for the printer specified on the
command line. An example output device is /dev/plp. Once the output
device is writable (by lp) lpenabled will enable the printer using the
enable(1) command.
lpenabled is normally invoked by lpsched(1) when it can not open the
output device and the output device. This can happen when the parallel
port is connected to both a floppy drive and a printer on O2 systems. The
parallel port will become available once the floppy is ejected at which
time lpenabled will re-enable the printer allowing printing to continue.
lpenabled may also be started if the ownership or device privileges are
changed on the /dev/plp* device such that lp can not write to the device.
Once the device privileges are restored to 0600 and the ownership is
reset to lp.sys then lpenabled will re-enable the printer allowing
printing to continue.
If lpsched(1) is started with the -nopoll command line option then
lpsched(1) will not run lpenabled (lpsched(1) will still disable the
printer even if -nopoll is used). Note: lpsched(1) is started in the
file /etc/init.d/lp at system bootup.
If the specified printer was not disabled by lpsched(1) then lpenabled
exits.
lpenabled is found in print version 1.7 or higher. lpenabled is only run
by lpsched(1) on IRIX 6.3 and higher (so IRIX 6.2 systems will not use
lpenabled even though it may be present).
printer Required. The name of the printer to monitor. Only one
printer may be monitored.
[ poll ] Time period, in seconds, to wait between checking to see if
the output port has become available. Default is 30
seconds.
[ delay ] Time period, in seconds, to delay before the first check of
the parallel port is done. Default is 30 seconds. If
delay is specified then poll must also be specified.
