 NAME    [Toc]    [Back]
vxinstall - menu-driven VERITAS Volume Manager initial configuration
      procedure

 SYNOPSIS    [Toc]    [Back]
      vxinstall

 DESCRIPTION    [Toc]    [Back]
The vxinstall utility provides a menu driven interface to configure
VERITAS Volume Manager (VxVM). After you install the VERITAS Volume
Manager software package (VRTSvxvm), run vxinstall to configure VxVM
for initial use on your system.

You can use the files /etc/vx/cntrls.exclude, /etc/vx/disks.exclude
and /etc/vx/enclr.exclude to automatically exclude controllers or
disks from use by vxinstall so that these devices are not configured
as VM devices. Each line of /etc/vx/cntrls.exclude must specify the
address of a controller to exclude, for example, c2. Each line of
/etc/vx/disks.exclude must specify the address of a disk to exclude,
for example, c0t3d0. Each line of enclr.exclude specifies an enclosure
to be excluded, for example, enc1.

 OPERATIONS    [Toc]    [Back]
      Licensing Option
vxinstall first asks if you want to view the VERITAS licenses
already installed on the system. Answering "yes" is equivalent
to executing the vxlicrep command (see vxlicrep(1)).

You are then asked if you want to add licenses for other VERITAS
products. Answering "yes" is equivalent to running the vxlicinst
command (see vxlicinst(1)). and entering a license key.

      Type of Installation
vxinstall next displays a list of installation options:

Select one of the operations to perform.

      Quick Installation    [Toc]    [Back]
Installs all disks not listed in the file /etc/vx/disks.exclude.
Disks under Logical Volume Manager (LVM) control, or recognized

 vxinstall(1M) VxVM 3.5 vxinstall(1M)

as whole disk file systems, are also excluded. You are prompted
whether to include or exclude all disks, on a controller-bycontroller
basis, from VERITAS Volume Manager control.

      Custom Installation    [Toc]    [Back]
For a custom installation, vxinstall displays a list of
controllers and disks. You can select each disk that you want to
put under VERITAS Volume Manager control and select among several
           other options.

           List of controllers    [Toc]    [Back]
vxinstall lists all controllers found on the system.

           List of disks    [Toc]    [Back]
vxinstall lists all disks for each controller. LVM disks do
not need to be listed in the /etc/vx/disks.exclude file,
they are automatically excluded from consideration (see
vxvmconvert(1M) for information on how to bring an existing
LVM disk under VERITAS Volume Manager control).

After receiving an acknowledgement, vxinstall provides
several options regarding how to bring the disks under
                VERITAS Volume Manager control.

           Commit changes    [Toc]    [Back]
vxinstall displays a list of disks to be brought under
VERITAS Volume Manager control and prompts you for a
                confirmation.

Prevent multipathing/Suppress devices from VxVM's view
You can select devices to be suppressed from the view of VxVM, or
prevent them from being multipathed by the dynamic multipathing
           (DMP) driver, vxdmp.

 HARDWARE-SPECIFIC NOTE    [Toc]    [Back]
Some environments provide guidelines to optimize VxVM's
interaction with intelligent storage systems. VxVM follows these
guidelines when adding disks to disk groups. If the operation fails,
VxVM displays the message to use the force option. The force option
ignores any such storage-specific guidelines and adds the disk.

 NOTE    [Toc]    [Back]
To enable these guidelines you require a separate license.

 FILES    [Toc]    [Back]
These files are used only by vxinstall and the VERITAS Volume Manager
      disk administration utility vxdiskadm.

/etc/vx/cntrls.exclude Specifies the addresses of controllers
                                    to exclude from vxinstall operations.
